Mangosteen Peel / Garcinia Mangostana
Manggis or mangosteen (Garcinia Mangostana) is a tropical evergreen plant that is believed to have originated in Java and the Moluccas of Indonesia.
For centuries, this fruit has been widely used as natural herbal medicine and therapy in Southeast Asia for maintaining or regaining health and as a cure to many diseases. Brewing the powdered peel with warm water can overcome dysentery. Applied topically in the form of an ointment, it can heal eczema, cysts, and other skin problems. Rich in nutrients and with more than 40 types of antioxidants, mangosteen earns the much-deserved title “Queen of Fruits”.
Mangosteen peel extract is used as pharmaceutical raw material as well as in health juices, cosmetics, and dyes.Other than high antioxidant capacity, mangosteen peel extracts have been reported to exhibit a wide range of functions including anti-microbial, anti-tyrosinase (which is an active melanin inhibitor), and anti-inflammatory.The antioxidant substances found in the peel are xanthones, flavonoids, and tannins, which protect the skin from free radicals and help in the process of healing wounds. The anti-microbial effect helps fight acne-causing bacteria.Additionally, tannin has astringent effects which can help improve skin appearance by minimizing pores and drying up oily skin.
