Gotu Kola / Centella Asiatica

Pegagan or Gotu Kola (Centella Asiatica) is a medicinal plant native to Indonesia and is widely cultivated on the island of Java. Traditional usages of Pegagan include skin remedies (minor itching, insect bites, eczema, photoaging, small wounds, scarring, keloids),improving blood circulation, immune system, and brain function, and treating neurological disorders.

The several active saponin compounds of Pegagan are a complex blend of made cassoside, asiatic acid, and asiaticoside(namely triterpenoids saponin as a group). In addition, Pegagan is also rich in fatty acids, flavonoids, and phytosterols. The flavonoids and triterpenoidssaponin present in the plant exhibit free radical scavenging activity and neutralizing oxidants on the skin surface. On top of accelerating the regeneration of skin cells, Pegagan bioactivity also shows improved strength of newly formed skin, which means a quicker wound healing process, diminished appearance of scars, wrinkles, or other blemishes, and inhibiting the inflammatory phase of hypertrophic scars and keloids. The triterpenoid content demonstrates anti-microbial activity which makes it a great ingredient for fighting acne. A study reported that Pegagan extract significantly stimulated collagen synthesis. A preliminary UV study suggested that Pegagan could be a potential natural protection against UVB damage, which may be due to its triterpene components.
